Trail Overview
This trail begins off the Cancun Beach Trail, looping around the far side of the salt flats before veering right into a section marked by the remnants of recent off-road races--expect deep bermed corners and large whoops early on. As you continue, you'll parallel a tidal river that flows in and out with the sea; be mindful of tide conditions here, as extreme high tides can flood the entire section and potentially leave you stranded. The route alternates between wide-open flats and tight desert corridors lined with low to medium-height vegetation, where the sandy terrain is consistently rutted but manageable. While the sand isn't particularly deep, 4WD and aired-down tires are essential for smooth progress. Midway through, you'll pass a small fishing camp with access to the bay before reentering a sequence of narrow, sandy desert trails. Near the end, the route opens into another salt flat stretch of 100 to 200 yards, and roughly half a mile later, it connects with a middle road that runs parallel between the highway and the coastline, marking the end of this scenic and varied off-road journey.
Difficulty
While this route isn't particularly technical, it does require close attention to tides and recent weather conditions. Several low-lying sections are crossed by tidal rivers or hold standing water, especially after rain. Some stretches feature long, sandy sections up to a foot deep, while others include deeply bedded corners and whoops reaching two to three feet in depth. Good ground clearance, 4WD, and the ability to air down your tires are highly recommended to ensure a smooth and safe passage.
