Trail Overview
This route is a key corridor for several off-road races, beginning at a well-known four-way intersection on the inland side. It quickly establishes itself with a fast-paced, straight 4-mile stretch alternating between hard pack and blown sand, though traction remains reliable. After a sharp 90-degree left, the trail continues as a mostly straight path with subtle curves, becoming increasingly sandy yet offering solid grip due to the recurring patches of firm terrain. This portion becomes notably more scenic, flanked by towering cacti and dense desert vegetation, and although the trail narrows, it comfortably accommodates full-size vehicles. Rolling climbs and descents of about 100 feet add texture to the drive before the road bends at a 45-degree angle, leading into the most visually stunning segment. Here, the path tightens again as it winds through vibrant desert landscapes, where you will likely spot coastal birds soaring overhead. Eventually, the trail opens onto the mangroves--offering an inviting detour for those with extra time and fuel to explore further.
Difficulty
While this route isn't particularly technical, it's highly recommended to have a vehicle equipped with four-wheel-drive and the ability to air down your tires. The long, sandy stretches can be deceiving, and without the right setup or recovery gear, a simple misstep could leave you stuck in soft sand with limited options for extraction.
