Trail Overview
This route begins off the main road to Punta Cancun and runs straight with intermittent washboards for approximately 2.5 miles before reaching a 90-degree left turn. If you skip the turn and continue straight, you'll arrive at the coastal fishing village of El Cayuco. After making the left, the trail continues for about three-quarters of a mile before a right-hand turn appears, leading to the fishing village and cooperative El Alhuate. From there, the loop passes through gently rolling desert terrain, with a two-track path that narrows in places and is covered in 3 to 4 inches of soft sand. The trail eventually reconnects with another road, giving you the option to turn either right or left to continue exploring.
Difficulty
Although this trail isn't particularly difficult, once you make the 90-degree left turn, you'll encounter some sandy stretches and rolling hills, along with a low-lying section that may flood during the rainy season or extreme high tides. While you likely won't need to engage four-wheel drive under normal conditions, it's a useful backup in this unpredictable terrain.
