Trail Overview

This scenic off-road trail begins just off a well-known Baja race route and meanders along the coastline before descending into the lush lowlands, where the road becomes more compacted and traces the edge of expansive mangroves. These low-lying areas can become waterlogged during high tides or after storms, so caution is essential--standing water should always prompt a second thought before proceeding. The trail offers a striking visual contrast, with vivid green mangroves replacing the typical desert vegetation, and occasional beach access points provide glimpses of the sea. About midway through the route, you'll encounter a small fishing village known as Los Praditos, where local fishermen live and work. The camp is well known in the region for its seasonal harvests of crab, shrimp, and scallops, which are caught fresh from the surrounding waters. From there, the trail briefly rejoins the Baja race road before dipping back into the mangroves for another mile. Just before the trail turns inland and reconnects with the race route, there's an opportunity for further exploration into a second fishing village--an area left unexplored on this particular journey.

Difficulty

While the trail is generally not difficult, there are a few sandy sections with 2 to 3 inches of loose sand that can pose challenges for 2WD vehicles. Additionally, when entering low-lying areas, there's always a risk of unexpectedly soft or saturated ground that can cause vehicles to sink. In these sections, having 4WD and basic recovery gear is highly recommended to ensure safe passage and avoid getting stuck.
