Trail Overview
Of the three dirt routes connecting Highway 22 near Puerto San Carlos to the scenic beaches at the point, this is the least picturesque--but also the widest and fastest if you're simply looking to get there quickly. If time allows, the more scenic Playa Quesadilla route is highly recommended. This route begins near the power plant, immediately passing the town cemetery before continuing for about a mile and a half through the local landfill--an unpleasant stretch made worse by rough, corrugated road conditions that require slow travel. Fortunately, the scenery improves significantly beyond this area as the trail opens into salt flats, leading to a narrow, sandy track that weaves through single-vehicle-width sections before eventually reconnecting with the Playa Quesadilla route near the point.
Difficulty
Any vehicle with moderate ground clearance should be able to navigate this route without issue. However, there is a brief section that winds through a desert stretch with 2 to 3 inches of soft sand, so some experience driving in sandy conditions is recommended.
