Trail Overview

Due to its challenging second half, this route starts in Valle Perdido and is classified as a rock-surface trail. Rated for high-clearance 4WD vehicles, it's best suited for Jeeps, side-by-sides, ATVs, and motorcycles, as larger vehicles may struggle with the narrow sections. The journey begins by winding through the outskirts of a ranch--watch for cattle on the road--before leading under towering oak trees and through a sandy wash. About halfway along the route, a right-hand turn marked with an "El Paso" sign signals the start of the technical section. From this point, the trail features steep, rocky climbs, typically 20 to 30 meters long, requiring 4WD and reduced tire pressure for traction. The first climb leads to a summit, followed by a steep descent into a valley with remnants of old structures and a sandy arroyo shaded by palm trees. Beyond the arroyo, another rock climb awaits, with hard slab surfaces dominating the remainder of the 2.5-mile stretch. At the trail's end, you'll connect with another route that links to additional trails, eventually guiding you to Todos Santos.

Difficulty

While this route is classified as a rock trail, the first 2.5 miles are actually a 2WD-friendly ranch road. The more challenging section begins at the El Paso turnoff. Vehicles larger than a Jeep may struggle with the narrow trail, and if you're driving anything larger than a side-by-side, it's advisable to bring a saw for clearing tree branches. This section consists primarily of rock and sandstone slabs, which can be slippery and will require 4WD and reduced tire pressure for optimal traction. Expect to navigate 10 to 12 steep rock sections, each over 20 meters long, involving both ascents and descents. One short stretch takes you through an arroyo with 6 to 12 inches of deep sand. After completing the final climb, you'll reach an intersection with other onX trails. Taking the left at this point provides the quickest route back to a dirt road.
