Trail Overview
This trail is a narrow and challenging route through the Sierra La Laguna Nature Reserve, open to motorized vehicles but best suited for motorcycles, quads, and side-by-sides due to its tight confines. The trail's width and low-hanging branches make it impassable for high-clearance 4WD vehicles without significant clearing. One tree near the end that is very large and low was the reason for anything larger than a side-by-side not to be included. Early on, you'll encounter a fallen El Cardon cactus that must be crossed or moved, setting the tone for the rugged journey ahead. One particularly demanding section involves descending into an arroyo with 6 inches of soft sand and baseball-sized rocks stretching for half a kilometer. The trail weaves in and out of narrow canyons, featuring numerous steep rock slabs that must be climbed--seven or eight in total--offering a type of technical challenge uncommon for Baja. The area teems with wildlife, from doves, roadrunners, and other desert birds to deer, coyotes, and foxes. After navigating the canyons' ups and downs, the trail emerges onto a smooth road leading back to the starting point of this adventurous loop.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 4 due to several steep rock slabs featuring near-vertical 3-foot sections at the start of some climbs. While these are not true ledges, as anything over 18 inches would exceed this rating, they still require precise navigation and careful control. The narrow terrain further limits maneuverability, adding to the challenge. However, vehicles properly equipped for this difficulty level should be able to navigate the entire loop successfully assuming dry conditions.
