Trail Overview
Departing from the small pueblo of 2 de Abril, this off-road trail heads west into the open desert in the direction of Puerto Chale. The initial stretch is relatively smooth, but conditions shift as you encounter scattered silt beds and a series of S-turns that wind around them. As the trail climbs out of the flats, the surface becomes noticeably rough--so much so that cow tracks often provide the smoothest line. Lightly traveled and increasingly rugged, the route is marked more by livestock paths than tire tracks, with chunky rock sections and intermittent trail definition. After a sharp 90-degree left turn, the trail improves slightly and appears to follow an old Baja race line, possibly used during wetter seasons. At one point, a low-hanging tree forces a detour--either maneuver around it carefully or trim a few branches to pass. Beyond this obstacle, the trail smooths out somewhat as it descends to intersect with Middle Road.
Difficulty
While this trail isn't particularly difficult and you may not even need to engage 4WD, airing down your tires will make the ride noticeably more comfortable and enjoyable. That said, there are a few soft sand sections--those classic "silk beds"--where 4WD can make the difference between cruising through and getting stuck. As long as conditions are dry, it's a relatively easy route for most vehicles.
