Trail Overview

The Whiteshell West Fireguard is a roughly 23 km backcountry route connecting PTH 44 with PR 307 along the western edge of Manitoba’s Whiteshell region. Originally developed as a forestry/fire-protection access corridor, the road now provides a scenic and surprisingly varied 4x4 route through mixed boreal forest, wetlands, old logging country, and Canadian Shield terrain. The character of the trail changes noticeably from south to north. The southern half is the more challenging section, with soft ground, deep muddy ruts, standing water, and large puddles that can become considerably worse after heavy rain. Some sections have multiple tire tracks where drivers have worked around deeper holes. A capable 4WD with good tires is recommended, and conditions can vary substantially with recent rainfall and the season. As you travel north, the trail generally becomes firmer, but still has lots of standing water. Gravel, exposed stone, and harder-packed sections replace much of the southern mud. The road passes through stretches of dense forest as well as open bog and wetland, with long straightaways that show the original fireguard alignment. Near the northern portion, the landscape increasingly takes on the rocky character of the Canadian Shield before the route reaches PR 307 near the western entrance to the Whiteshell. There are numerous old logging roads and side trails branching from the main route, but their condition and access status can vary

History

Originally developed in the early 1960s as part of Manitoba’s forest-access and wildfire protection network, the Whiteshell West Fireguard followed the western edge of the Whiteshell Forest Reserve. Provincial and federal records refer to it as the West Fireguard Road or Whiteshell West Fireguard. The route also provided access to logging areas, gravel pits, and nearby granite quarry operations.
