Trail Overview

Lowland Road is a quiet rural gravel route west of Lac du Bonnet that winds through a mix of farmland, wetlands, old homesteads, and wooded sections of aspen and mixed forest. The road is generally easy in dry conditions, but drivers may encounter washboard, potholes, loose gravel, muddy shoulders, and softer surfaces after heavy rain or during spring breakup. A notable point of interest along the route is St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church and Cemetery, a historic landmark connected to the area’s early Ukrainian farming community. The church adds a strong sense of local heritage to an otherwise peaceful backroad drive. Lowland Road is better suited to scenic exploration than technical off-roading. Watch for wildlife, farm equipment, local traffic, and changing road conditions, and remain on the public roadway while respecting nearby private property.

History

Lowland was a small rural settlement district west of Lac du Bonnet rather than a formal town or village. Established by Ukrainian and Polish farming families, it consisted of scattered homesteads connected by Lowland Road, historically known as Parish Highway 84. The road formed part of the local parish-road network, linking farms with neighbouring communities, churches, and essential services. A prominent reminder of this early settlement period is St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church and Cemetery at the intersection of Lowland Road and Allegra Road. Built through the efforts and sacrifices of the district’s Ukrainian pioneers, the church became an important centre for preserving their faith, language, and cultural traditions. Today, Lowland Road continues along this historic agricultural corridor through cultivated fields, wetlands, old homesteads, and regenerating forest. Although now travelled mainly as a quiet rural backroad, it reflects the settlement history of the Lowland district and the generations of families who established farms in this part of eastern Manitoba. Lowland survives primarily as a historic geographic name for the surrounding rural area.
