Trail Overview
This Loop is a fantastic scenic circuit that gives drivers an ideal lay of the land while providing direct access to Fussee Lake and the surrounding backcountry trail network. Winding through varied East Kootenay terrain, this loop serves as a central hub from which numerous spur trails branch off and spiderweb through the woods. As the timber opens up along the route, you are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. For those looking to spend the night, the shoreline of Fussee Lake offers a couple of prime, undeveloped campsites with well-established rock fire rings. Outside these lakeside spots, however, there are very few dispersed camping options along the rest of the loop. The trail surface demands a bit of attention, featuring plenty of potholes, deep mud holes, and long, continuous sections of ruts. Because the soil holds moisture, the loop can become slick, boggy, and potentially impassable during heavy rain or the early spring thaw, when the ground is heavily saturated. You can expect a couple of bars of cellular service, though the signal fades in and out as you dip through the trees and terrain features.
Difficulty
While not overly technical in bone-dry summer conditions, the trail earns its 3/10 rating due to frequent potholes, deep mud holes, and long stretches of deep ruts. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle with good tires is strongly recommended. Use caution in early spring or after heavy rainfall, as saturated ground can quickly turn rutted, muddy sections into impassable bogs.
