Trail Overview
This trail is a wide, well-maintained gravel artery that serves as a primary gateway into an expansive spiderweb of backcountry trails in the East Kootenays. While the main road itself is a quick, effortless cruise, its real value lies in the sheer number of branching spur roads waiting to be explored. Depending on which offshoot you take, these side trails will wind you deep through the timber, lead you to quiet backcountry lakes, or drop you into peaceful, tucked-away dispersed camping spots. Because Craven Road is an active industrial corridor, recreational drivers share the route with heavy commercial traffic. Keep your headlights on for visibility in the dust, stay to your side of the road on corners, and watch for logging trucks, dump trucks, and heavy equipment operating in the area. Connectivity out here is minimal, with just one weak bar of cell service that fades in and out as you travel through the trees, so be sure to have your offline onX maps downloaded before leaving the highway.
Difficulty
This is a wide, graded, and well-maintained gravel road built to support heavy industrial trucks. It has no technical obstacles and is easily passable by any standard 2WD car, truck, or SUV, as well as trailers and campers heading toward the surrounding dispersed camping spurs.
