The Ashland Reservoir Trail begins at the Ashland State Park Main Trailhead, accessed via the state park road off Union Street. From the trailhead, head east toward the beach area, then pick up the shoreline path heading north along the reservoir’s edge. The route quickly reaches the Ashland Dam, which provides an elevated crossing with expansive views of the water. After the dam, continue south as the trail curves through a mix of wooded terrain and shoreline, eventually circling back to the starting point. Hikers should use caution at the southern end of the reservoir where the route briefly connects to Spring Street
The west side of the route offers smoother walking, while the east side is more rugged with exposed roots and rocks. The trail is open year-round, though parking fees apply May through September. While the reservoir supports boating, fishing, and swimming in designated areas, this route is best suited for hiking and walking with leashed dogs. Alternate access points exist throughout the park, but the full route is most easily followed from the main trailhead. Expect scenic water views, varied footing, and one of the more accessible day hikes in eastern Massachusetts.
