This moderate hiking route begins at the Elm Street Trailhead in Norwich, Vermont, and follows the Appalachian Trail up to mature northern hardwood and birch forest. The trail climbs steadily along the ridge, gaining elevation through a mix of shaded canopy and occasional open clearings. At the Heyl Trail junction, continue straight on the Appalachian Trail as it wraps around the southern slope of Moseley Hill. Continue around the hill towards the Heyl Trail, which contours along the northern slope and descends back toward the starting point.
The return route offers a quieter, less-traveled path through mixed forest before reconnecting with the Elm Street Trailhead. Wildlife is commonly seen in this quiet section of the Green Mountains, including deer, barred owls, and signs of moose. Expect seasonal brook crossings near the base of the hill and occasional muddy stretches in spring. This trail offers a peaceful backcountry feel with easy access from town and is best enjoyed between April and November.
