The Hazen Trail begins near the Wilder Dam in Hartford and heads north along the Connecticut River before ending near Huntley Meadow in Norwich. This easy to moderate route follows a mix of singletrack and wider forest path, with minimal elevation change. Hikers can expect a shaded corridor of floodplain forest, where river views open up between the trees.
The trail crosses occasional boardwalks and uneven ground, with roots and soft soil in places, especially near the river. In spring, sections may flood or ice over. Historical stone walls appear along the way, a reminder of the region’s agricultural past. Keep an eye out for migratory birds throughout the year, especially near forest clearings and river inlets. The Connecticut River is always nearby but not recommended as a drinking source without proper filtration. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the route is open to snowshoeing in winter. Connecting paths to Montshire Museum lands require admission or a guest pass, but the Hazen Trail itself remains open to the public year-round.
This route offers a relaxed hike with consistent river scenery and quiet forested stretches just minutes from town.
