Starting from the William Tucker Trailhead near Elm Street Extension in Norwich, Vermont, this moderate route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the Appalachian Trail. The route begins on the William Tucker Trail, following a well-marked but narrow singletrack uphill through old farmland marked by weathered stone walls. After connecting with the AT, the trail reaches the historic Happy Hill Shelter—a 1930s-era CCC structure—where dispersed camping is permitted and a seasonal spring may be flowing nearby.
From the shelter, head back on the Appalachian Trail. The descent follows a gentle grade, winding through quiet forest with occasional views toward the Connecticut River Valley. After a short distance on the AT, turn on Crossingham Road, a gravel path that leads back to Happy Hill Road and the trailhead. The route is best hiked between May and November, with snow and mud season potentially impacting spring access.
The combination of forest scenery, historical features, and accessible terrain makes this a rewarding short outing or overnight trip near town.
