The Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) is an 16-mile multiuse route that forms a full circuit around the town of Middlebury, Vermont. This route begins near the Middlebury Athletic Complex and can be accessed from multiple other trailheads, including popular entry points like Wright Park. Managed by the Middlebury Area Land Trust, the trail crosses a mix of public and private land, winding through quiet hardwood forests, open meadows, and residential corridors.
To complete the full route, hikers follow clearly marked paths that connect several town parks, conservation lands, and rural edges. From the Athletic Complex, head north through wooded terrain, cross Otter Creek near Wright Park, and continue through segments that offer views of the Green Mountains to the east and glimpses of the Adirondacks to the west. Educational kiosks appear along various sections, highlighting local ecology and conservation efforts. The trail includes gentle hills and occasional steeper grades, but most of the terrain remains easy to moderate. Seasonal conditions can affect footing—expect muddy sections during spring thaw and icy patches in winter. Wildlife is common along the route, including deer, foxes, and songbirds.
With multiple access points and year-round use, the TAM is ideal for hikers and trail runners looking to explore varied terrain close to town while enjoying peaceful scenery and well-maintained paths.
