There and Back
The Abbey Pond Trail begins at the trailhead off Case Street (VT Route 116), and climbs gradually through mixed hardwood forest. The route follows an old logging road before narrowing into a singletrack path, climbing steadily over rocky and often wet terrain. Roughly halfway in, the trail crosses a few small streams. Only the first crossing has a bridge. The surrounding dense forest is a good place for wildlife sightings, including moose tracks and beaver activity near the pond’s outlet.
As the trail levels out, it reaches the edge of Abbey Pond, a shallow, scenic body of water tucked beneath cliffs and forested slopes. This is a quiet spot for a break or picnic, though camping is only allowed under Green Mountain National Forest guidelines and fires are prohibited near the pond. The return follows the same route back to the trailhead. Abbey Pond is the highlight of this hike, offering mountain views, wildlife watching, and a peaceful forest setting.
