Poetry-lined forest path with Green Mountain views and quiet glades rich in seasonal wildlife.
The Robert Frost–Water Tower route begins and ends at the Robert Frost Wayside Trailhead off VT Hwy. 125, east of Middlebury. From the parking area, follow the interpretive Robert Frost Trail, a flat and well-maintained loop through mixed forest dotted with placards displaying the poet’s work. After a short distance, turn onto the Water Tower Trail and start uphill. This section climbs gently through spruce and hardwood stands, passing through fern glades and occasional low bogs before reaching a quiet ridgetop clearing. A scenic overlook along this upper section offers a broad view of the surrounding Green Mountains.
From here, the trail bends downhill and rejoins the original loop near the trailhead. Moose tracks are occasionally spotted along the trail, and songbirds are active during spring and summer. While accessible year-round, snow and ice may cover the route outside of the main hiking season. This mellow loop offers a peaceful walk with literary and scenic rewards.
