There and Back
This section of the Long Trail begins at the Middlebury Gap Trailhead off VT Route 125 and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest, transitioning into spruce-fir as elevation increases. The route follows the white-blazed Long Trail southbound, ascending steep and occasionally rocky terrain, especially in the upper sections. After a moderate initial climb, hikers reach a signed junction with a spur trail leading west to Pleiad Lake. This short detour adds minimal distance and offers a peaceful lakeside rest area and potential water source.
Back on the Long Trail, the route continues uphill, weaving through dense forest and crossing occasional seasonal streams. Higher up, the trail steepens again before reaching the summit of Worth Mountain. The summit offers limited but rewarding views through the trees, with better vantage points just beyond the summit area. Wildlife sightings, including moose and black bear, are possible in this remote stretch. The forested climb and quiet lake access make this one of the more rewarding day hikes in the Green Mountains.
