Description
From the trailhead at Middlebury Gap on VT-125, this route follows the Long Trail north through mixed hardwood forest, climbing steadily along the spine of the Green Mountains. After a short distance, the trail begins a moderate ascent with several rocky sections and root-covered tread, typical of Vermont’s high-country hiking. The overlook at Silent Cliff is located a short distance after the initial climb, where the trail reaches a dramatic ledge. The exposed outcrop offers a broad west-facing view across the Champlain Valley, with the rounded ridges of the Green Mountains extending to the south. In autumn, this area becomes a popular destination for fall foliage hikes in central Vermont. Use caution near the cliff edge, especially in wet or icy conditions. Return along the same route to complete this scenic day hike in the Green Mountain National Forest.
