Starting from the trailhead off Seminary Street, this route loops through the northern and southern portions of the Battell Woods trail system, following wide, well-maintained paths shaded by mature hardwoods. Along the way, hikers can explore several branching paths that loop through a dense hardwood forest known for its wildlife habitat and bird activity. Interpretive signs along some sections offer information about the local ecology.
While elevation gain is minimal and terrain is easy, seasonal conditions affect footing—expect mud in the spring and icy patches in winter. Ticks can be active in summer, and leaf-covered trails may become slick in the fall. There are no reliable water sources, so plan ahead if staying out for an extended time. This short, family-friendly route offers a quick escape into nature just minutes from downtown Middlebury.
