Loop
The Otter Creek Loop begins and ends at the Wright Park entrance off Seymour St in Middlebury. From the trailhead, head north on the main path into a mixed hardwood forest, quickly entering the lush corridor along Otter Creek. Follow the trail as it winds through mossy ravines and shaded groves, with occasional interpretive signs highlighting the area's ecology and cultural history. Several side trails connect back to the main route, offering optional detours.
As the trail nears its halfway point, it approaches Belden Falls, where filtered views through the trees offer a scenic highlight. Sections near the creek can be muddy or slick after rain or during spring thaw, and uneven footing may require extra attention. Some trail segments permit mountain biking and cross-country skiing, but hiking and on-leash dog walking are allowed throughout. The route eventually bends south and returns through open woods before closing the loop near the trailhead. Year-round access and varied terrain make this one of the best day hikes near Middlebury for creekside walking and casual exploration.
