This moderate hiking route begins at the parking area for Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Hampden, Massachusetts, and winds through a network of trails managed by Mass Audubon. From the sanctuary entrance, follow signs for the Mort & Helen Bates Trail, which passes a small pavilion overlooking a quiet pond—a good spot for observing birds, aquatic insects, and occasional beaver activity. At the early junctions, keep right to stay on East Brook Trail, which crosses old stone walls and weaves through the remnants of historic orchards. Look for glacial erratics and a seasonal vernal pool active with amphibians and insect life.
Continue along the right-hand forks onto the Burgess Trail, then Neff Trail, where the route enters denser hemlock forest. The Neff section is quieter and more rugged, with narrow footing and occasional muddy stretches, especially after rain. Birdwatchers can expect potential sightings of hermit thrushes, woodpeckers, and barred owls. Dogs, horses, and other non-foot traffic are not permitted. The route circles back to the trailhead via the western segment of the same network, offering a calm, nature-focused outing through varied terrain and habitat.
