The Ashley Reservoir Trail begins at the Whitney Avenue Gate near the Elks parking lot in Holyoke, MA. From the trailhead, follow Whitney Avenue northwest along a wide gravel path toward the first causeway. After crossing the water, turn right to continue along another causeway that skirts the eastern edge of Wright Pond. The route dips briefly into a wooded section before reaching a road—turn left here, then quickly pick up Daily’s Road by turning left again to follow the opposite side of Wright Pond. From there, the route curves south toward the Ashley Reservoir Dam. Cross the dam and continue along Lower Westfield Road as it bends around the reservoir’s eastern shoreline. After a short distance, turn left to cross a final causeway, reconnecting with the initial path and returning to the trailhead.
This mostly flat, well-graded route travels around a network of interconnected ponds and wetlands within Holyoke’s drinking-water supply reserve. Raised causeways provide expansive views and opportunities to see ducks, geese, turtles, and other wildlife. On the western side of the route, hikers pass through hemlock stands and seasonal vernal pools. The trail is open year-round and popular in winter for walking or snowshoeing, though muddy or flooded sections can occur after rain. Dogs, fires, camping, and motorized vehicles are prohibited. With gentle terrain and scenic water views throughout, this route offers a peaceful outing for novice hikers and locals alike.
