This moderate route begins at the Mount Tom Visitor Center at the junction of Reservation Road and Christopher Clark Road. Shortly after passing the gate on Old Reservation Road west of the Visitor Center, turn right onto the yellow-blazed Dynamite Trail as it climbs steadily through mixed forest toward the ridgeline. At a junction with the blue-blazed John McCool Trail, stay left to continue uphill. Take the first right, then make an immediate left back onto Christopher Clark Road. From here, follow the white-blazed New England Trail on the right side of the road up the ridge, where basalt cliffs and open stretches offer sweeping views. After a short final climb, the route reaches Goat Peak and its prominent fire tower—an ideal spot to take in panoramic views of the Connecticut River Valley and surrounding highlands.
From the tower, hikers can either retrace their steps or descend the New England Trail to the Visitor Center, a short walk right after reaching Reservation Road. Expect some rocky footing, occasional stone steps, and exposure to vehicle traffic near road crossings. The trail is open year-round, but parking fees apply during the warmer months. Bring your own water, and watch for ticks along grassy sections of trail.
