Loop
This easy route begins and ends at the trailhead parking lot off Bear Hole Road in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The path forms a full circuit around Bear Hole Reservoir, following mostly wide, gravel access roads through a mix of forest and open areas. From the trailhead, head northwest on Bear Hole Reservoir Road, continuing past several unmarked junctions. About halfway around, the route passes a small waterfall and the remains of a stone chimney near the reservoir’s northwestern edge. Continue south and follow the road across the reservoir dam before circling back to the trailhead with a left turn onto Reservoir Road Connector.
Though the elevation change is minimal, sections can be muddy or icy in wet or cold conditions. Some intersecting trails allow cyclists or motorized use—stay alert at crossings. Wildlife sightings are possible in this protected watershed area, including deer, birds, and other small animals. The loop offers peaceful views of the reservoir and surrounding woods, with the waterfall and chimney adding interest along the way.
