Point to Point
This point-to-point segment of the Finger Lakes Trail begins at a small parking area along Short Cut Road in McDonough State Forest and travels south through a quiet stretch of hardwood and mixed forest. The trail follows rolling terrain with occasional short climbs, staying primarily on singletrack footpath. Around 1 mile in, pass through a forested saddle before continuing along a ridgeline that offers intermittent views through openings in the trees. The route remains remote and lightly trafficked as it crosses into Ludlow Creek State Forest.
Continue south past seasonal streambeds and old logging corridors before descending steadily toward the Stone Quarry Road crossing, where this segment ends. Dispersed camping is allowed off-trail, and water may be available from small creeks—always treat before drinking. Wildlife sightings are common, and hunters may be active in season. This is a quiet and rewarding walk through the wooded hills of Central New York.
