The Whaupaunaucau Loop Trail begins and ends at the Whaupaunaucau State Forest parking area off Skaneateles Turnpike, just west of North Norwich in central New York. This easy to moderate route follows well-maintained forest roads and singletrack trails through a peaceful woodland landscape dominated by mature hardwoods. From the trailhead, follow the main trail as it winds gently uphill, then loops through a mix of level terrain and rolling forested ridges. Several unsigned junctions appear along the way—generally, stay on the wider, more defined path to remain on the main loop.
This route is popular for day hikes, trail running, and cross-country skiing in winter. Seasonal streams may be present, but there is no reliable water source, so hikers should come prepared. Wildlife sightings, especially deer and songbirds, are common in the quieter stretches of forest. In spring, expect muddy conditions in low-lying areas. Ticks and mosquitoes can be active in summer, and hunting is permitted in the fall—wear blaze orange during that season. This is a pleasant and uncrowded route for hikers looking for a mellow forest experience in central New York.
