Point to Point
This route begins at the day-use trailhead near the beach parking lot in Gilbert Lake State Park and follows wide, well-maintained paths through quiet hardwood forest. From the trailhead, head west toward the Twin Fawns Trail, which passes interpretive signs and skirts wetland edges on short boardwalks. Deer are often seen browsing near the path, and signs of beaver activity are common around small ponds and seasonal streams.
At a signed junction, bear right onto the Ice Pond Trail and follow gentle terrain toward the shoreline. Ice Pond provides a scenic midpoint, with opportunities to filter water and spot waterfowl or amphibians along the edge. The route eventually curves back north and reconnects with the Twin Fawns Trail, completing the loop.
This is a mellow, family-friendly hike ideal for spring through fall, with snowshoe access possible in winter. Dense tree cover and multiple water features make it a good choice for short day hikes in Central New York.
