The Plymouth Loop Trail begins and ends at the Plymouth Lean-to trailhead on Fred Stewart Road, deep within Pharsalia Woods State Forest. From the trailhead, the route follows a well-established forest path through mixed hardwoods and softwoods, forming a gentle loop through the heart of this remote public land. Hikers should follow trail markers clockwise or counterclockwise; the route eventually circles back to the same point. Expect a generally easy grade with a few muddy, rocky, or uneven sections, especially after rainfall.
Along the way, the trail passes intermittent streams and low-lying wetland areas where hikers may spot signs of beaver activity or catch glimpses of moose or deer. The trail also offers quiet seclusion and a primitive lean-to site for those planning an overnight trip. Water is occasionally available from seasonal sources, but treatment is strongly recommended. The route remains accessible year-round, though winter conditions can require snowshoes or skis. Wear blaze orange during fall, as hunting is permitted in-season. This low-traffic route offers solitude and a quiet walk through one of central New York’s lesser-known state forests.
