Loop
The Mount Roderick Loop begins at a small trailhead deep within Taylor Valley State Forest, accessed near Cheningo Camping Area. From the outset, the trail travels through mature hardwood stands on a gently climbing path. Follow the marked trail as it loops clockwise to reach the higher sections of Mount Roderick, where the grade steepens briefly before leveling off along a quiet ridgeline. This middle section provides opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy extended stretches of solitude beneath a dense canopy.
Seasonal streams appear in the lower forested areas and may offer water in spring and early summer—filtration is essential. The trail surface can become muddy, especially after rain or snowmelt, and some footing may be uneven. Primitive camping is allowed at least 150 feet from trails and water sources, and fires are permitted under DEC guidelines. The route returns to the trailhead through a gradual descent, rounding out a peaceful day hike with few crowds. This is a solid choice for hikers seeking low-traffic trails and moderate elevation in Central New York's backcountry.
