This moderate hiking route begins along Pat Connor Road, south of the main Rutland Brook Wildlife Sanctuary entrance. From the trailhead, follow signs to join the Rum Rock Trail heading east through dense hemlock and white pine forest. After turning right onto Rum Rock Trail, the path climbs gradually at first, then transitions into moderate and occasionally steep slopes. Roughly halfway around the loop, the route passes the namesake Rum Rock—a massive glacial erratic tucked into the shaded woods. From there, continue along a well-marked trail over rocky terrain, moss-lined brooks, and scattered boulders before returning to the starting point.
Expect uneven footing, wet conditions during spring melt or after heavy rain, and quiet scenery along the brook. Two optional spur trails lead to a rock shelter and an old mill site near the route’s north and south ends. Dogs, horses, and other non-foot traffic are not permitted. This is a short day hike in central Massachusetts with rewarding forest and geologic features.
