Loop
The Swift River Yellow Loop begins and ends at the Nichewaug Tract parking area off Nichewaug Road in Petersham, Massachusetts. This moderate route follows a well-marked path through the Swift River Reservation, managed by The Trustees of Reservations. From the trailhead, hikers head south into a mixed hardwood forest, where the route meanders near the East Branch of the Swift River. The trail forms a full circuit, passing through open fields, across rocky ledges, and beside remnants of early farmsteads—look for cellar-holes and hand-built stone walls throughout.
As the trail winds through second-growth forest and transitional farm-woodland terrain, it offers a mix of shaded paths, gentle climbs, and occasional stream crossings. Expect muddy or slippery conditions after rain, and watch for icy sections in winter. Dogs are allowed on leash, and hunting is permitted in season—wear blaze orange during the fall. The route is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, though winter access may be limited if parking is unplowed. Hikers may also create shorter variations using the Dropdown or Carruth trails. This is a rewarding outing for those seeking scenic day hikes in Central Massachusetts with river access and seasonal color.
