Loop
The Swift River Red Loop begins from the trailhead off Barre Road (Rt. 32/122) in the Slab City Tract of Swift River Reservation in Petersham, MA. From the parking area, follow the wide path into the woods and reach a junction shortly after setting out. Stay right at this junction to begin the Red Loop, where you’ll pass the stone remains of the Williams Homestead tucked just off the trail. The route continues through mixed hardwood forest and along open field edges, with good opportunities to spot wildlife such as deer, porcupines, and woodland birds.
About halfway through the loop, a short spur trail leads to a scenic overlook—worth the quick detour for a quiet view across the landscape. Toward the end of the route, hikers can choose to turn right onto the Blue Loop to extend the outing and trace the wetland edge of the East Branch Swift River. Otherwise, stay on the Red Loop to return to the trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash, and hunting is permitted in season—wear blaze orange during the fall. This easy, year-round route offers a peaceful walk through varied terrain with subtle historical and natural highlights.
