This moderate hiking route begins at the roadside pullout along Route 101 (Queen Lake Road) at the entrance to the Elliott Laurel Reservation in Phillipston, Massachusetts. From the parking area, follow Laurel Loop left into the forest. At the junction, turn left onto Hemlock Loop, climbing gradually up a rocky hillside to reach a set of open ledges with partial views through the trees. The trail continues through hemlock stands, mixed hardwoods, and dense mountain laurel thickets—the plant for which the reservation is named. Along the way, pass remnants of old stone walls, a reminder of the land’s agricultural past.
After descending, rejoin Laurel Loop and return to the parking area. This short route offers varied terrain, a peaceful woodland atmosphere, and seasonal highlights like blooming laurel in late spring.
