The Ware River Rail Trail begins just off Route 122 in Barre, Massachusetts, and follows a gentle northward route along a former railroad bed to Baldwinville, passing through the towns of Hubbardston and Templeton. The trail features mostly easy to moderate terrain and is accessible year-round. From the Barre trailhead, hikers follow a gravel and dirt surface through forested terrain alongside the Ware River and, further north, near the Burnshirt River. This corridor offers several side paths and potential loop options in the southern portion near Barre.
Most of the route follows a straight rail corridor, with soft grades and a well-maintained tread in many areas. Hikers will encounter riverbank views, shaded woodland stretches, and occasional remnants of railroad history, including an abandoned cemetery near the river. While generally quiet, the trail does cross a few local roads—use caution when approaching these intersections. Note that the shorter northern section near Baldwinville does not directly connect to the longer southern portion below Massachusetts Route 2. Access points and trail conditions may vary by town, and users should note that some segments restrict bikes and horses. Dogs are generally allowed but must be leashed. After wet weather, expect muddy or uneven tread. This route is popular for walking, biking, and snowmobiling in winter, and makes for a scenic walk along one of central Massachusetts’ quieter river valleys.
