Description
Willow Tree Bottom Trail traverses the northwestern portion of Manuel F. Correllus State Forest. This singletrack route can be accomplished in either direction. From the northern end, begin near the intersection of Old County Road and Dr. Fisher Road. Follow Dr. Fisher Road a short ways northeast and turn right onto Willow Tree Bottom Trail. The trail climbs gradually through dry, open terrain and passes through distinctive shrubland habitat that is rare in New England forests. Trail users should stay on the marked path as it weaves through conservation areas managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation. There are no reliable water sources along the route, and forest rules prohibit camping, fires, and off-trail travel. A short distance down Fire Road E at the southern end leads to the Heath Hen Memorial—a tribute to the extinct bird once native to the island—making this trail a worthwhile destination for both recreation and reflection.
