The Great Hay Trail begins from a small parking area on Great Hay Road, just inside the boundary of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge. This easy walking route follows a flat, historic cartway once used to haul salt hay from the southern marshes to Cape Cod farms. The trail winds through oak woodlands, mossy cedar swamps, and pitch pine forest, with optional detours on intersecting side paths. From the trailhead, follow the main track north. After a short distance, take a right turn toward Abigail’s Brook and cross the stream, staying left afterward to rejoin the main route. Continue north through varied terrain until reaching a secondary trailhead farther up Great Hay Road, then retrace your steps to return.
The route skirts Jehu Pond’s tidal estuary, where hikers may spot osprey, turkeys, and white-tailed deer. Though generally well-maintained, overgrown sections, exposed roots, and seasonal mud can present minor challenges. Ticks and mosquitoes are common in warmer months—bring repellent. Poison ivy may be present near trail edges. Dogs are not allowed in the refuge. With its natural variety and colonial-era history, this trail offers a peaceful walk through classic Cape Cod landscapes.
