This route begins at the trailhead parking area on Bumps River Road in Osterville, within the Skunknett River Wildlife Sanctuary. From the start, follow Bog Cart Path northeast into the woods. At the first Y-intersection, turn right onto the West Pond Circuit Trail to begin circling the pond in a northerly direction. The path curves gently west, winding through forest and wetland areas with occasional filtered views of West Pond, a classic Cape Cod kettle pond.
As the route continues, it skirts a rare Atlantic White Cedar swamp and passes habitat frequented by ospreys, black-crowned night herons, and seasonal waterfowl. Watch for signs of the area’s past—old cranberry bogs and remnants of mill activity reflect the sanctuary’s quieter history. To close the route, turn right onto Holly Trail and follow it back to the trailhead. This short, year-round walk offers a relaxed hiking option with subtle ecological and historical features that reward observant visitors.
