The Horse Pond Trail starts from a parking pull-off on Higgins Crowell Road, just south of the Yarmouth Police Department. From the trailhead, follow the main path heading east through a shady, mixed-forest corridor. At a Y-intersection just before reaching Horse Pond, stay left to begin the loop. Continue past five minor trail junctions, staying on the main path, then turn left and head north onto land managed by the city water department. After crossing a small parking area, pick up the main trail heading east.
At the fourth junction on your right, turn southwest toward Basset’s Lot Pond. Curve right to loop around the northern shore of the pond, then stay straight at the next junction to reconnect with the main trail. On the return leg, take a left at the Y-intersection near Horse Pond to follow the shoreline before arriving back at the trailhead. This easy route travels through quiet forest and offers views of both Horse Pond and Basset’s Lot Pond. Wet meadows north of the trail support rare and endangered plant species, and a small beach along the pond’s edge offers a scenic place to pause. Open year-round, this town-managed trail provides a peaceful walk through a classic Cape Cod landscape.
