The John Wing Trail begins just behind the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster and travels through several distinct coastal habitats. From the trailhead, the route winds through coastal pine woods before crossing a long boardwalk over expansive salt marsh. After reaching Wing Island, hikers typically turn right to pass the John Wing Monument, then continue to the beach on the island’s eastern side. The route reaches a wide barrier beach along Cape Cod Bay, where low tide reveals tidal pools and sweeping shoreline views. From there, it returns along a different path on the opposite side of the island, eventually reconnecting with the boardwalk and forest trail near the starting point.
This short, family-friendly route is mostly flat and well-suited to beginner hikers, but it is tide-dependent. At high tide, sections of the boardwalk may flood or become slick, especially where it crosses marsh channels. Check tide charts before starting and wear footwear appropriate for wet or uneven terrain. Bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts will find excellent viewing opportunities in the marsh and along the shore. Leased dogs are allowed on the public trail October 1 through April 30, but are prohibited on museum property year-round.
