The Cliff Pond Loop begins near the boat launch and parking area off Flax Pond Road inside Nickerson State Park in Brewster, MA. This easy, mostly flat route traces the entire shoreline of Cliff Pond, a large kettle-hole pond known for its clear water and sandy bottom. Hikers can head in either direction from the trailhead, following a well-traveled path that weaves through coastal pitch pine and dry oak forest. The route stays close to the shoreline, occasionally narrowing or becoming rooty or sandy. In some areas, the trail briefly detours away from the pond before returning to the water’s edge.
Although elevation gain is minimal, expect modest ups and downs as the route curves around coves and inlets. Several short side trails lead to the water, offering scenic rest spots, sandy beach access, and pond views. Dogs are not allowed on the beaches. Poison ivy may be present along narrow sections, and muddy stretches can linger after rain. The route returns to the parking area after completing the full circuit around the pond, though hikers can extend their outing with a side trip to Little Cliff Pond and make a loop around that shoreline as well. Expansive views across the water and the quiet character of the forest make this one of the best easy day hikes on Cape Cod.
