This moderate route begins at the Menemsha Hills Reservation parking area off North Road in Chilmark. From the trailhead, follow the Brickyard Trail through coastal forest and gently rolling terrain until reaching a junction with the Nashawahkamuk Loop. Turn left to descend toward the shoreline, then turn left again onto Beach Trail near Bettlebung Swamp. Continue northeast along Cobble Stone Beach—a rocky stretch of coastline with broad views across Vineyard Sound to the Elizabeth Islands. This beach segment can be narrow or submerged at high tide, so plan to arrive near low tide for easier travel.
After walking the shoreline, the trail climbs gradually to a second junction with Brickyard Trail. Here, hikers can extend the route north to visit the remnants of a historic brickyard, including a tall chimney and scattered ruins. Otherwise, turn right to return to the trailhead. The entire route lies within land managed by The Trustees of Reservations and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Expect poison ivy and ticks in warmer months, and consider short spurs to optional overlooks with ocean views. This is one of the best coastal day hikes on Martha’s Vineyard for hikers seeking a blend of forest walking, quiet history, and beach access.
