There and Back
The Paine Mountain Trail begins at the end of Byam Hill Road, following a forest road that ascends steadily into dense hardwoods. The trail passes through a mix of maple and beech forest, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding Northfield Range. Near the summit, the grade steepens again with occasional views of the Green Mountains.
This moderate hiking route includes uneven footing and short steep pitches, particularly near the top. Wildlife sightings are possible throughout, and interpretive signs may highlight the mountain’s ties to Norwich University’s history. Use caution on wet or muddy days, as footing can be slick. Return the way you came, and enjoy the rewarding views one more time before descending.
