The Irish Hill Trail begins off Darling Road near East Montpelier and climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest dominated by maple and beech. From the outset, the trail gains elevation at a moderate grade, with some rocky and root-covered sections that require careful footing. As the route ascends, it remains well-defined but narrow in places, with occasional wet or muddy stretches, especially in spring or after rain. There are a few minor junctions leading to spurs; simply stay on the main path heading south toward the summit.
Near the top, the trail levels briefly before reaching Irish Hill’s summit area, marked by a clearing and a partial overlook to the west. While views are somewhat limited by tree cover, hikers can glimpse the surrounding hills near Montpelier, particularly in late fall after leaf drop. This route offers a quieter alternative to more trafficked peaks in the region and is a solid choice for hikers seeking a short, moderate workout in a peaceful setting.
