The Stony Brook Rim Trail begins and ends near the main parking area at Stony Brook State Park in Dansville, New York. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest, paralleling the gorge carved by Stony Brook Creek. After gaining elevation, the trail traverses the upper rim with intermittent views into the steep-walled canyon below. Stay right at early junctions to remain on the rim route. About halfway through, the trail curves back toward the main park area, descending gradually through wooded terrain. Some sections feature uneven footing and exposed roots, particularly on steeper segments near the edge of the gorge.
While the Rim Trail does not pass directly alongside the waterfalls, hikers can connect to the nearby Gorge Trail for closer views. Wildlife sightings—especially deer and songbirds—are common in the quieter upper forest. The route is best tackled from late spring through fall, though icy or muddy conditions may persist during shoulder seasons. Dogs are welcome on leash, and water is available from the creek, though it must be treated. This moderate hike offers a peaceful perspective above one of the best waterfall hikes in western New York.
