Description
This route begins at the main trailhead near the North Entrance parking lot of Stony Brook State Park. From the trailhead, follow the Gorge Trail south along Stony Brook, where the path winds through steep canyon walls, crosses historic stone bridges, and passes three major waterfalls. Expect uneven stone steps, staircases, and short climbs as the trail closely parallels the stream. After a gradual ascent past the last major cascade, turn onto the East Rim Trail to begin the return leg above the gorge. The rim trail travels through dense hardwood forest, offering higher vantage points of the gorge and surrounding hills. The route eventually reconnects with the North Entrance near the starting point. Seasonal closures are common on the Gorge Trail in winter or after heavy rain, so check conditions before visiting. With waterfalls, shaded canyon walking, and elevated viewpoints, this route highlights the best of Stony Brook’s unique landscape.
