The Gorge Trail begins at the main trailhead near the north entrance of Stony Brook State Park and follows Stony Brook upstream through the heart of the gorge. The path is well-maintained with stone staircases, railings, and scenic bridges that cross back and forth over the stream. Hikers pass a series of waterfalls in quick succession, with opportunities to pause at overlooks and take in the canyon walls rising above the creek. At the southern end of the gorge, the route connects with both the East Rim Trail and West Rim Trail, offering options to return along higher terrain before rejoining the starting point near the picnic areas.
The route is family-friendly but includes steep stairs and can be slippery after rain, making sturdy footwear important. Seasonal closures occur in winter when ice hazards develop in the gorge. Summer brings shaded walking beneath hardwood forest and cool air rising from the stream, making it one of the most popular day hikes in the Finger Lakes region. The payoff comes in the variety of waterfalls and the chance to explore a classic New York State gorge on foot.
