Loop
This moderate route begins from the parking area on the main park road in Wells State Park and winds along the historic Mountain Road Trail—an old road dating back to the 1700s. The trail forms a circuit around the base of Walker Mountain, weaving through mixed forest and past exposed ledges that offer brief but scenic views. Near the southern portion of the loop, the trail skirts Walker Pond, providing a flat, lakeside section that contrasts with the more rugged, wooded terrain elsewhere on the route.
Follow the main park road southwest from the parking area to the junction with Mountain Road Trail. Continue right and climb gradually along the base of Walker Mountain, passing a gate early in the ascent. The route reconnects with the park road to complete the circuit back to the parking area. Seasonal trail conditions vary—watch for mud in spring or leaf-covered rock slabs in fall. This is a good option for hikers looking for a short, historical hike with varied terrain and easy navigation within Massachusetts State Parks.
